Following the devastating attacks on September 11, 2001, New Yorkers and Americans debated the best way to memorialize the thousands of Americans who lost their lives that day.
One of the most well-known New Yorkers at the time was Donald J. Trump, now the President of the United States, but then a private citizen and real estate tycoon.
Never one to back down, Donald Trump addressed the issue in the only way he knows how. "If we rebuild the World Trade Center in the form of a skeleton, Freedom Tower, the terrorists win."
"What I want to see built is the World Trade Canter stronger and maybe a story taller. And that's what everybody wants. We should have the World Trade Center bigger and better."
Prior to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the North Tower of the World Trade Center was the tallest building in the world at 1,368 feet. The South Tower clocked in just below that, with the rooftop observation deck at 1,362 feet high.
To symbolize the greatness of the United States of America, One World Trade Center now stands even higher at 1,776 feet.
