The Oklahoma State Cowboys and Mike Gundy, suffered a heartbreaking 48-47 loss to rival Oklahoma in Norman last Saturday. After the game, a disappointed and obviously frustrated Mike Gundy stepped up to the podium for the postgame interview.
While Gundy was answering questions about the tough loss, he felt he needed to talk about something that was bothering him. That is his apparent distaste with “Snowflake” student transfers, and the “non-committal” society “liberalism” has created within our culture.
Gundy is a firm believer in how “liberal” society has slowly crept its way into the game of football, leaving its unwanted stain. The longtime coach started with issues with “snowflake” players starting terrible trends. For example, players transferring schools on a drop of a dime.
OSU coach, Mike Gundy, believes these young athletes are developing bad habits due to a society teaching all the wrong principals. These remarks from Gundy are made a day after starting safety, Thabo Mwaniki, announced his plan to transfer from Oklahoma State and play somewhere else.
“I think we live in a world where people are non-committal, Gundy said to the collected media. We allow liberalism to say, ‘Hey, I can just do what I want and I don’t have to really be tough and fight through it.’ You see that with young people because it’s an option they’re given. We weren’t given that option when we were growing up. We were told what to do, we did it the right way, or you go figure it out on your own.”
“In the world today, there’s a lot of entitlement. I’m a firm believer in the snowflake.” said Gundy.
NCAA transfer rules allow a student-athlete to appear in up to four games before redshirting, and being able to keep a year of eligibility. NCAA records show almost 5% of top-level college football players transferred between schools in 2017.
Gundy continued, “I think it’s setting there. And I’m not talking about Thabo. Thabo and I have had multiple good talks. I’m talking about every millennial young person. Generation Z, I think is what they call ’em. That’s the world we live in because if they say, ‘Well, it’s a little bit hard,’ then we say, ‘OK, well, let’s go try something else.’ vs. ‘Hey, let’s bear down and let’s fight through this.’ So you see a lot of that nowadays, and that doesn’t have anything to do with Thabo or (Jalen) McCleskey or anybody that’s been on the portal here.”
“That’s just general in society even if you’re working down here at Walmart. Your boss gets after you and tells you that you’re not doing a good job, you may go home and cry and tell your mom, but your mom may say it’s OK, That’s just kind of the facts of life, the world we live in today.”
Gundy concluded his rant to the media with “Don’t get me on politics!”
The OSU Cowboys are 5-5 this season, with a 2-5 record in their conference. They currently sit towards the bottom of the Big 12 Conference. Mike Gundy recently signed a 5 year contract extension with OSU, making $4.2 million a year. Gundy has an overall record of 119-58 with the Cowboys.
